March is National Nutrition Month!
Dr. Welz went on a plant-based diet ten years ago and hasn’t looked back since! He has lost over seventy pounds and is on no medications. His hope and aim is to provide the best care for his patients and knows that education, knowledge and exposure is fundamental in doing so. Oral health and nutrition/diet have become more closely looked at in the past few years and have given dentists and doctors a new understanding on how to tackle certain diseases. At every new patient exam, Dr. Welz not only educates and talks to you about how your health can affect your teeth, but how your health can affect your life.
Ten years ago, Dr. Welz decided to radically change his diet after his doctor telling him “there was no medical consensus on how to lose weight”. He was instantly converted after finding a CD tape by Dr. Joel Fuhrman called “Eat to Live” after walking into a Whole Foods for the first time in his life. Since that day, Dr. Welz has read hundreds of books on nutrition, watched countless videos on “Nutritionfacts.org” and taken continuing education courses on nutrition.
So how does your diet or overall health affect your dental or oral health?
Well, its like the old saying goes “you are what you eat” –and what you eat is very important. We eat through our mouths so what we supply it with dictates our health. Poor nutrition affects your entire body and entire immune system, thereby increasing susceptibility to many disorders. People with poor immune systems and poor ability to fight off disease have been shown to be at higher risk for periodontal (gum) disease. Inflammation impairs the body’s ability to do its job and you become even more at a risk of chronic periodontal disease or periodontitis. Additionally, research shows a link between oral health and systemic conditions, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
There is also a strong link between obesity and periodontal disease and those who are obese have less microbiota diversity, so we know there is a possibility of a link between low microbiota diversity and periodontal disease. What does this mean? It means we should be eating a vast variety of organic plant based foods and other nutrient rich foods to flourish our oral microbiota. However, our diet does not only alter our oral microbiota, it also alters our gut microbiota, and ultimately…our whole body.
